Characteristics and applications of commonly used carbon tool steels
The carbon content of carbon tool steel is in the range of 0.65% to 1.35%. The high-carbon steel used for manufacturing tools can be divided into high-quality high-quality carbon tool steel and high-quality carbon tool steel according to the different smelting quality requirements. Generally, it is only used to manufacture small-size, small-cutting tools and low-speed cutting tools, as well as simple shapes of molds and measuring tools.
(1) Brand and chemical composition
Grades: T7, T8, T9, T10, T11, T12A, etc.
Chemical composition: C, Mn, Si, S, P,
(2) Characteristics and applications of commonly used carbon tool steels
T8
Main characteristics: After quenching and tempering treatment, it can obtain higher hardness and better wear resistance, but the strength and plasticity are not high, the hardenability is low, it is easy to overheat and deform when heated, and the ability to withstand impact load is low .
Application Examples: Used to make tools with high hardness and wear resistance where the cutting edge does not heat during work, such as: wood milling cutters, countersinks, axes, longitudinal hand tools, simple shapes and punches.
T10
Main features: Steel has better toughness, higher strength, and higher wear resistance than T8, T8A, T9, and T9A, but it has low thermal hardness, low hardenability, and large quenching deformation.
Application examples: Used to manufacture tools with poor cutting conditions, high wear resistance, and not subject to strong vibration, toughness and cutting edges, such as drills, turning tools, profile hole tools, and making wear-resistant parts with small punching systems , Such as: small shafts, low-speed bearings, pins.
T12
Main features: high hardness and high wear resistance, but low toughness, poor thermal hardness, poor hardenability and large quenching deformation.
Application Examples: Used for manufacturing various tools with small punching system, low cutting speed, and hardness modification, such as: milling cutter, drill, die, scraper, file, saw blade.
